Ceridian HR/Payroll Software Review & Analysis

4 stars Average rating: 4 (from 95 votes)

Ceridian's Sweet Spot & Competitor Solutions

Ceridian's HR/Payroll Latitude Sweet Spot
The customer target market for Ceridian's HR/Payroll Latitude software includes the vertical markets of Financial Services, Government, Manufacturing, Professional Services, and Retail. Though no specific employee number was specified by the vendor in relation to the application, the best fit (based on current customer size) for the HR/Payroll Latitude appears to be the middle market (broadly defined as 500-2500 employees). That being said, Ceridian does have a number of larger enterprises that utilize its payroll and HR software offerings—the largest of which is approximately 30K employees.

Marquis customers that leverage Ceridian HR software solutions include World Vision, Ace Hardware, The National Rifle Association (NRA), Bass Pro Shops, VCA Antech, and Gamestop.

Short List the Ceridian payroll and HR software solution when:

  • Your business is within one of Ceridian's supported vertical markets
  • You seek an HR software solution that is basic without best-of-breed talent management functionality
  • Your organization has a high concentration of complex U.S., Canadian, or UK payroll needs
  • You favor an on-premise HR and payroll software system over a cloud HR solution
  • Your organization is already leveraging Ceridian for your payroll needs

Alternative Solutions
Payroll and HR software buyers may be best advised to seek an alternative to Ceridian if:

  • Your organization operates globally and needs global HR functionality beyond payroll
  • Your organization needs to leverage in-depth HCM analytics
  • You are seeking deeper integration into additional ERP capabilities like financials, CRM, etc.
  • Your company requires an end-to-end solution that leverages social capabilities for functions such as learning and development, performance management, and or recruiting
  • Your company needs the flexibility and innovation that comes from an established, "true" multi-tenant SaaS HR solution

Ceridian Competitors

Because of both the Outsourcing and Payroll capabilities that come with the solution, Ceridian's most direct competitor is Automatic Data Processing (ADP). Ceridian also competes with Kronos for Workforce Management customers, but has limited functionality compared to its counterpart. However, Ceridian's latest Workforce Management SaaS offering (InView) has significant potential to become a leader—especially in the mobile solutions market. Additional competitors with similar payroll functionality include Paychex; Paylocity Corporation; Intuit Online Payroll; and SurePayroll.

Concluding Remarks

As attested by Ceridian's success with their payroll and administrative HR offerings, the company can best be described as a "best-of-breed" core HRMS solution. While the larger HR software market is clearly making headway towards a unified HR suite (combining core and talent management capabilities), this doesn't necessarily preclude Ceridian from being a viable option—especially for those organizations that are looking to leverage "best-of" technology offerings. For example, Taleo, SumTotal, and Halogen all have excellent solutions for talent management, but could use the "core" functionality that Ceridian offers.

Ceridian as a company has had significant obstacles to overcome in its path to get here, but carefully-crafted strategy from here-on-out could put the company back on top of the leaderboard if focus is shifted back towards Research & Development (R&D) and innovation in the areas of SaaS, mobility, consumer technologies, social media and analytics among others. The current system is basic, but easy to use and graphically uncluttered; and as such is a solid solution for the right application. Ceridian's challenge at this point though, is determining (and thusly communicating) their product strategy; deciding which applications will benefit the most from further development and which ones need to be left behind. InView may well be the future of Ceridian, but they have to figure out what they're doing right now first. End
